CalPERS Retiree Health Plan Rates for 2020

The CalPERS Board of Administration met today (6/19/19) to adopt new health plan rates for 2020. For CSU retirees who are in traditional Medicare and whose dependents - if any - also are in Medicare, the rates for those in the PERS Choice and PERS Select supplement to Medicare plans will decrease by 2.50%, while the rates for those in the PERSCare supplement to Medicare will decrease by 2.55%.

The premium for CSU retirees and their dependents - if any - who are in Medicare Advantage (HMO) plans will increase. The increase for those in the Kaiser plans (both in-state and out-of-state) will increase by 4.85%. The increase for those in the UnitedHealthcare HMO plan will be 9.24%. The increase for those in the Anthem HMO plan will be 8.59%.

Note bene: The CSU currently makes the following flat-rate monthly healthcare contributions to CalPERS on your behalf regardless of Medicare status:

Retiree only - $734
Retiree + one dependent - $1,398
Retiree + two or more dependents - $1,788

These numbers should increase slightly for 2020. The CSU contributions are more than sufficient to cover the 2020 premiums for retirees and their dependents - if any - who are in Medicare. As a result, most CSU retirees will see no impact from the changes in premiums for 2020. However, those who are subject to the Income-Related Medicare Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) may see some changes in their reimbursements in 2020.

Those CSU retirees who are not yet in Medicare, or who have dependents on their plans who are not in Medicare should check the CalPERS website for the rates for basic and for combination plans for 2020.
